Time To Learn

Last night was the largest Raleigh Ruby Brigade meeting I have been to (of course, I have only been going since February). Each time I have gone, I have come away with a little something. Most of the time, it is not directly Ruby related - although there is usually a tip or package discussed (after last night, I want to look at RSpec).

We got a little preview of Nathaniel's presentation at RailsConf. It was a good presentation although I am not going to talk about it here. What I want to mention are the conversations after the talk which were very informative. They ranged from presentation style, starting your own business and building applications. Most of these were small tips, but put them together and they can add up into something larger. Here are a few:

  • check out and attend BarCamp
  • (presenting) for every point you have to make, make eye contact with a person in the audience until you have finished that point and then move onto the next perrson (thanks)
  • read Presenting to Win
  • keep an open mind (be flexible, you don't know what will come your way)
  • you can be successful even if you did not follow the traditional path
  • check out the io language

One of the more convincing points made last night was to read Getting Things Done. Of course, I have heard this before and have considered getting a copy. After last night, I think I am going to have to read it. If nothing else to form my own opinion about the book.

There was much more discussed, but either 1) I can't seem to find reference to it, 2) I am waiting until after RailsConf or 3) I just forgot it.

I am off to NFJS today.

Ironically, I just picked up GTD to read again for the first time in a long while. I highly recommend taking a peak at it.
  2. Richard said 3 days later:
That's my plan. I heard about GTD again this weekend at NFJS.
